Introducing the WAGs of Rugby League
We have heard about football WAGs for years, and there have been many high-profile women who have had a footballer on their arm. However, within other sports there are also some intelligent and beautiful women who cheer their partner on from the sidelines. Rugby league, for instance, boasts a few high-profile couples, and the WAGs recently raised £20,000 for the charity Life For a Kid. If you’re not from the north of England, you’re probably not familiar with Rugby union’s faster, fitter cousin. Rugby league was invented during a dispute over payments for players in the late 1800s, which led to the splintering of the sport, and two different games.
The game is often seen as a faster, more entertaining alternative to rugby union, and for those who enjoy football, rugby league might make a fun evening with the lads. Once you have got the telly on and the beers out, why not check out the odds over at William Hill and each take a punt on a Super League team? You might develop a new found love for a sport which you never usually watch. Even though the sport is popular in the UK, in Australia it is incredibly popular, with players and their WAGs often becoming sponsors for major products. The wives and girlfriends are just as you would expect, fierce, feisty and clever to boot. We’d like to introduce you to the WAGs of rugby league:
Helen Skelton
Skelton is a former Blue Peter presenter, sports reporter and BBC Athletics correspondent. She has written a novel, visited the South Pole and in 2009, Skelton became the second woman to complete the Namibian “ultra marathon” of 78 miles. She has also reported for coverage of the Super League, which could be where she met her husband, Richie Myler, who is currently Leeds Rhino’s star scrum half. The couple have two children, and are expecting a third in 2018.
Belinda Bartholemew
Belinda Bartholemew is the partner of NRL star Aidan Guerra, who has played for both Australia and Italy and recently signed a three-year contract with the Newcastle Knights. Bartholemew and Guerra have a child together, but being a mother isn’t all that keeps Belinda busy. She started to train as a vet before she met Guerra, however a glittering life in hospitality awaited her in Dubai. After a long friendship and love affair, Bartholemew eventually left Dubai behind to be with Guerra, and now works as a blogger and scrunchie entrepeneur.
Sophie Watkins
Sophie Watkins runs the Youtube channel and blog ‘Secret Life of a Rugby Wife’, where she details the glamorous parts of her life such as holidays away, and the not so glamorous side, such as watching cold matches in the rain. At the beginning of 2018, her husband Kallum Watkins, became the captain of the Leeds Rhinos, which she shared with pride on social media where she is often pictured looking perfectly on trend.
We’ll always love the WAGs of the football world, but if these women are anything to go by, there could be a shakeup in the celebrity scene. And if we haven’t convinced you to take a weekend off the footie, then we don’t know what will!
